POP, or Post Office Protocol, accounts allow the user to download email to their local computer by default. Frequently when an email has been downloaded it is then erased from the mail server so that once the message has been downloaded to
a computer it cannot be opened on a different computer. However, some email accounts now allow messages to remain on the server for a period of time allowing the user to read the same messages again on another computer, such as at work and at home. While in an area with no internet access, POP is an advantage allowing you to read your messages without being connected to the internet. Coming right along side the advantage of POP is the advantage of WiFi. Computer users in cities have had the advantage of going to coffee shops and bookstores to check email and do internet searches by connecting to wireless internet. However, many residents of rural America have not been so lucky. They have only had dial-up internet access, having to log off when wanting to make a phone call or send a fax. Phone and cable companies have not been willing to invest the great amount of money it would take to provide broadband access. Today’s technology advances have started pushing WiFi in rural areas where the internet was previously unavailable. Rural communities are excited to join the technology world with wireless internet access. People are having the opportunity to attend on line universities and communicate and share pictures with friends and family around the country.
